Law CPD course and accountancy CPD course requirements

CPD is mandatory for a range of law, accounting and other regulatory bodies. Law and accounting professionals are encouraged to assume responsibility for their own development and choose from a range of activities relevant to their responsibilities and development needs. In some cases a proportion of the CPD requirement can be met through self study, with the balance met by by participating in training courses that are offered by accredited CPD providers.

Requirements for law CPD points and ACCA CPD units

In the UK law CPD points requirements are determined by the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority (the SRA). CPD unit training course requirements for ACCA members are determined by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. One hour of study or training equals one point or unit.

ACCA CPD units

Association of Chartered Certified Accountants' (ACCA) members are expected to perform their own “gap analysis”: evaluating their current skills, identifying knowledge gaps and then considering how best to meet their need for CPD training courses. CPD requirements are compulsory for all ACCA members, including those who are semi-retired or work part-time, practising certificate holders and those with insolvency licences.

ACCA CPD requirements

ACCA members are required to complete 40 CPD units each year, where 1 unit equals 1 hour of training. 21 units need to be verifiable, including participation in formal CPD courses. The remaining units can be non-verifiable e.g. general business reading, technical writing and reviewing other material that aids learning.

Law CPD points requirements

Qualified solicitors and law professionals are required to undertake CPD. CPD requirements are determined by the SRA. All qualified solicitors and law professionals who are in legal practice or employment, or who work 32 hours or more per week, are required to complete a minimum of 16 hours’ CPD per year, with the CPD training year running to 31 October. At least 25 per cent of the SRA’s CPD points requirement must be met by participating in courses that are offered by providers authorised by the SRA and which require attendance for one hour or more. FTA Ltd is accredited with the SRA as a CPD training provider for the legal profession (CPD reference number DQQ/FTAL).
